Northeastern Illinois County GIS Cooperative Program

HOME

The six counties of northeastern Illinois (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will) are engaged in a long term cooperative program in GIS, and are consulting with neighboring counties in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana as well. These six counties have a combined population of over 8,000,000 people (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004) representing 65% of the population of Illinois.

One of our major goals is to structure the GIS data we share so that it integrates seamlessly throughout the Chicago region to better support public safety agencies having responsibilities that span multiple counties. This will result in spatial and attribute data changes that will impact other government agencies, educational institutions and non-profit organizations that receive data from any of the participating counties. As progress is made in establishing these new standards and in their implementation we will share that information with our GIS colleagues here.

The participating counties have chosen the Illinois GIS Association as the forum for sharing information about our work. This will take the form of update sessions at ILGISA conferences, articles in the ILGISA Illinois GIS Notes publication and principally through this website.
